Water Lily Care

Planting Hardy Water Lilies.

Use a good clay soil if possible. Top soil from your local garden center will do in a pinch. Bentenite Clay can be added to any water soil mix to thicken it up. Do not use top soil that includes a lot of organic matter or manure; just straight top soil.

Add water and mix your new soil into a muddy soil. Fill your pot about ¾ full of your soil mix.

Place your Water Lily tuber at an angle. Blunt end down. Leave the crown or growing end up. Stick your blunt end into the soil against the side of your pot. Insert root system into the soil. Be careful not to pull roots out of the plant. Do not plant the crown below the soil level.

All leaves and plant should be above the soil surface. It is better the lily be planted to high than to low.

Add river rock on top of the soil.

Stone will help hold the water lily tuber down until the root anchors the plant. It will also protect your plants from your fish. Use a stone big enough that they will not fit in your fish’s mouth. If you have large fish, use large stone. They pick them up and spit them out otherwise. This will expose your plant and possible damage it.
